Introduction

Memantine hydrochloride is an excellent dementia treatment drug developed by Merz, Germany.Its chemical name is 1-amino-3,5-dimethyladamantane hydrochloride.
It was approved by the European CPMP and the US FDA in 2002 and 2003 for the treatment of moderate and severe Alzheimer's disease.
In 2006, it was approved for sale in China under the trade name Ebixa.

Mechanism of Action

Memantine hydrochloride can non-competitively block NMDA receptors, reduce excessive excitation of NMDA receptors caused by glutamate,
prevent cell apoptosis, thereby improving memory and enhancing patients' cognitive function.
Since memantine hydrochloride has low and moderate affinity for NMDA receptors,
it does not hinder the physiological function of glutamate in normal learning and memory while blocking glutamate excitotoxicity.

Uses

Clinical studies have confirmed that memantine hydrochloride has a good therapeutic effect on vascular dementia
and Alzheimer's dementia, which is an advantage that other types of dementia treatment drugs
currently under development do not have.Therefore, this drug has good economic and social benefits.
