Biological Activity

3,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid (α-resorcylic acid) is the primary metabolite of alkylresinols. Alkylresinols can be hydrolyzed by liver enzymes in phase I metabolism.

Chemical properties

White or light pink needle-shaped crystals. Melting point 232-233℃. Soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone and hot water.
Reacts with fuming sulfuric acid or hot concentrated sulfuric acid to form purple-red compounds. Reacts with ferric chloride to produce wine color.

Uses

Used as organic synthesis intermediates, used in pharmaceuticals, synthetic resins, etc.

Production method

Originated from benzoic acid by sulfonation, alkali fusion and acidification. Benzoic acid is sulfonated with fuming sulfuric acid
at 240-250°℃ for 5h to generate 3,5-disulfonic benzoic acid, which is then alkali fused with sodium hydroxide at 300℃. The resulting
reaction product is neutralized with sulfuric acid to weak alkalinity, filtered and concentrated, then acidified to weak acidity,
and extracted with ether. The crude product obtained by recovering ether from the extract is recrystallized with water to obtain the finished product.
